Namibian president elected leader of ruling party with landslide victory
Namibian President Hage Geingob was elected as the president of the ruling SWAPO party with a landslide victory, said the party on Monday morning.
Geingob, now acting president of the ruling party, won 574 out of 766 votes at the Sixth Elective Congress of the SWAPO Party concluded here at the weekend.
According to the party's policy, the winner will automatically become SWAPO'S candidate in the 2019 national presidential election.
Geingob's bid for the presidency of the ruling party was challenged by Youth and Sports Minister Jerry Ekandjo and former Prime Minister Nahas Angula.
